A DC-DC charger is what lets a van or truck camper recharge a lithium house battery while driving. Wiring the house battery straight to the starter battery through a relay can overload the alternator, because lithium soaks up as much current as it’s given, and modern “smart” alternators drop their voltage too low to finish a charge. A DC-DC charger limits the current to its rating and boosts the voltage to a proper lithium charge. Size it to your alternator: a 20 to 30 A charger for a stock alternator in a smaller vehicle, 40 to 60 A for a high-output one.
