Gear Ranking ranks products with a published, repeatable method instead of a hand-picked list. Each category has its own scoring model, chosen for what matters to people buying that kind of product, and the model is written up in full on the category’s “How we rank” page.
Where the data comes from
- Specifications come from manufacturers’ own product pages and manuals, with the source recorded for each product.
- Measured results come from independent reviewers who publish their test method, such as usable-capacity tests for power stations. Each product page links every test it uses.
- Prices are checked by hand from the retailers linked on each page. The check date is printed beside the price; prices change often, so the retailer’s price at checkout applies.
When a figure isn’t published or tested, the scoring model uses a neutral middle value for that factor and the product page marks it as estimated. The estimate never favours a product over one with a real figure.
How the site is funded
Some outbound links are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, and as an eBay Partner we may be compensated if you make a purchase. That income pays for the site. It never changes a score or a rank: the ranking is computed from the data before any link is attached, and a product with no affiliate link ranks exactly where its score puts it.
Analytics
The site uses Google Analytics to count which pages and rankings people use. Its cookies stay off until you accept them in the banner, and no ads run here.
Corrections
Specs get revised and new tests get published. If a figure here is wrong or out of date, the sources listed at the bottom of each product page are the place to check, and corrections are applied at the next data refresh.
