Best Inverter Generators Ranked

41 portable inverter generators scored on price per watt, noise, run time, fuel options and safety.

Last updated: October 22, 2026

An inverter generator runs its engine into an alternator and then through an inverter, so the power it puts out is as clean as a wall outlet and safe for laptops, TVs and furnace controls. The engine also slows down when the load is light, which makes it quieter and lets a tank last longer than on an open-frame generator of the same size. 19 of the 41 generators here can also run on propane, and 33 shut themselves off when carbon monoxide builds up.

Each size is ranked separately. Prices run from $349.99 to $4,899. Noise and run time are the makers’ ratings, since almost no reviewer publishes measured figures that can be compared across models.

Never run a generator indoors, in a garage or near an open window, even with a CO shutoff.
