Best DIY Mini-Split Heat Pumps Ranked

45 DIY mini-split heat pumps scored on price per unit of heat at 5 °F, cold-weather performance, efficiency and warranty.

Last updated: October 21, 2026

A ductless mini-split is a heat pump in two parts: a wall unit inside and a compressor outside, joined by refrigerant lines through a 3-inch hole. It heats and cools one room or open area, and a modern one keeps heating well below freezing. The DIY kind comes with its refrigerant already sealed in. 25 of the 45 here use quick-connect line sets that screw together with no vacuum pump. The other 20 use flared line sets: still sold for self-install, but you need a vacuum pump and gauges, and some makers’ warranties ask for a licensed installer.

Every capacity and efficiency number here is an AHRI-certified rating, taken from the NEEP cold-climate heat pump list or ENERGY STAR, not from the box. Each size is ranked separately. Size by your coldest weather, not your summer: a unit that keeps all of its rated heat at 5 °F does a very different job in January than one that keeps 52%.
