Best Charge Controllers Ranked

24 MPPT solar charge controllers and DC-DC chargers scored on price per amp, features, efficiency and warranty.

Last updated: October 22, 2026

A charge controller sits between a power source and a battery bank and decides how hard to charge it. An MPPT solar charge controller takes the high, shifting voltage from solar panels and turns it into the most charge current the battery can take. A DC-DC charger does the same job for the vehicle’s alternator: it charges a house battery while you drive, at the right voltage for lithium, without overloading the alternator or draining the starter battery. Some DC-DC chargers add a solar input, doing both jobs in one box.

The number that sizes either one is its maximum charge current in amps. A 30 A controller charges a 100 Ah battery from empty in a bit over three hours of good sun; a 50 A DC-DC charger does it in about two hours of driving.
