An undercounter ice maker is plumbed to a water line and makes ice all day, so a kitchen, bar or outdoor kitchen never runs out. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much ice a day you get for the money, how much it makes and holds, how much power it uses, how long it’s covered and whether it needs a floor drain.
Ice type is the first choice. Clear ice melts slowly and looks good in a glass; nugget ice is soft and chewable; crescent and standard cubes are cloudy but make more ice for the price.
Drain is the second. Melt water has to go somewhere: a gravity drain needs a floor drain or standpipe below the unit, while a drain pump can push water up and across to a sink drain, which is what most kitchens need.
