The efficient version of QuietCool’s ducted fan for a typical home, with a very low-power low speed for running all night.
Amazon $1,599A whole house fan sits in the ceiling of an upstairs hallway and pulls cool evening air in through open windows while it pushes hot air out through the attic. Where nights are cool and dry, it can replace most air conditioning for a fraction of the power. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much air you get for the money, how much power it takes, how loud it is, how well it seals the opening in winter and how long it’s covered.
Size comes first. A common rule is 2 to 3 CFM per square foot of living space, so a 2,000 sq ft home wants about 4,000 to 6,000 CFM. More airflow cools faster but needs more open window area and more attic vents. The airflow here is the certified figure measured through the damper and duct, which runs 20 to 30% below the free-air number in many model names, so a fan sold as a “7000” can sit in the 3,001 to 5,000 or over 5,000 CFM group.
Ducted or direct mount is the second choice. A ducted fan hangs the motor in the attic on a flexible duct, which keeps most of the noise and vibration out of the house. A direct-mount fan sits in the ceiling opening itself: cheaper and simpler, but louder.
Attic venting has to keep up. Makers ask for a set area of net free attic vent for each fan, listed on the product page. Too little and the attic pressurizes and the fan moves less air.
