A low-cost, ENERGY STAR variable-speed pump for above-ground pools, for buyers who want the efficiency without paying for a big brand.
Amazon $379.95The pool pump is often the biggest electricity user in a house with a pool, because it runs for hours every day. A variable-speed pump saves most of that by running slowly: the power a pump draws falls much faster than its flow, so turning one at half speed moves half the water for roughly an eighth of the power. Since July 2021, US efficiency rules have made variable-speed motors the norm for in-ground filter pumps.
Every pump sold in the US since then carries a certified weighted energy factor (WEF): thousands of gallons pumped per kilowatt-hour, averaged over the speeds a pump runs at day to day. Bigger pumps naturally score a lower WEF, so this ranking compares each pump’s WEF with the ENERGY STAR minimum for a pump of its type and hydraulic horsepower, which makes a 1.5 HP and a 3 HP pump comparable. Each pool type is ranked separately.
