Best Rooftop Tents Ranked

47 soft shell and hard shell rooftop tents scored on price per square foot of bed, weight, weather protection, comfort and warranty.

Last updated: October 31, 2026

A rooftop tent rides on your roof rack and opens into a bed above the ground: flat, dry, away from mud and critters, with the mattress already made. Few people get to try several before buying, and most reviews cover one tent. So these rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how big the bed is, what it costs and weighs for that size, how waterproof the fabric is, and how comfortable and well covered it is.

There are two kinds. A soft shell tent folds in half under a fabric travel cover and opens out over the ladder, which roughly doubles the floor and gives the most bed for the money, but takes several minutes to set up and pack. A hard shell tent lives in a rigid fiberglass, ABS or aluminum case that pops straight up or opens like a clamshell, usually in a minute or two. It costs more and has a smaller bed for its footprint, but it’s quieter at highway speed and shrugs off wind and snow better.

Before you buy, check two numbers: your vehicle’s roof dynamic load rating and your rack’s. Both have to cover the tent’s weight while driving. Follow the maker’s mounting instructions.
