Best Chainsaws Ranked

40 battery and gas chainsaws scored on price per inch of bar, power, weight, bar length and warranty.

Last updated: October 31, 2026

A chainsaw does the heavy part of cutting firewood, clearing storm damage and keeping a property tidy. These rankings cover saws with 12 to 24 in bars, the range most homeowners use, and compare what the makers publish on the same terms.

There are two kinds. A battery chainsaw starts at the squeeze of a trigger, makes no fumes, needs no fuel mixing or carburetor care, and is far quieter. The best now cut as fast as a small gas saw, but a battery lasts for a limited number of cuts, so a big firewood day needs a spare. A gas chainsaw runs all day on a tank of mix, has more power for felling and big rounds, and costs less for the bar length, but it’s louder, heavier and needs regular upkeep.

Bar length is the first choice: 12 to 14 in for pruning and limbing, 16 to 18 in for general cleanup and firewood, 20 in and up for felling and big hardwood. Wear chaps, eye and ear protection, gloves and a helmet, and follow the maker’s safety instructions.
