Best Air Compressors Ranked

40 portable and stationary air compressors, scored on price per CFM, airflow, tank size, noise and warranty.

Last updated: October 31, 2026

An air compressor runs nailers, fills tires, blows out dust and, at the larger sizes, drives impact wrenches, sanders and paint guns. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much air you get for the money, how much air it makes, how big the tank is, how loud it runs and how long it’s covered.

Airflow at 90 PSI, in standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM), is the figure that decides which tools a compressor can keep up with. A brad or finish nailer needs well under 1 CFM; a framing nailer about 2; an impact wrench 4 to 5; a dual-action sander or paint gun 8 to 12. Tank size sets how long a tool runs before the motor kicks in, which matters most for tools that use air in bursts.

Portable compressors, under 10 gallons, carry to the job and plug into any outlet. Stationary compressors, 10 gallons and up, have the airflow for continuous air tools; the biggest need a 240 V circuit.
