A leaf blower clears a yard, a driveway or a gutter of leaves, grass clippings and light snow in a fraction of the time a rake takes. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much air it moves for the money, how fast that air comes out, how heavy it is and how long it’s covered.
Two numbers describe a blower. CFM, cubic feet per minute, is how much air it moves, which is what pushes a big pile of leaves along. MPH is how fast the air leaves the tube, which is what lifts wet or matted leaves off the grass. A blower needs both; CFM matters more for big yards.
There are two styles. A handheld blower is the right size for most yards up to about half an acre. A backpack blower puts the engine or battery on your back, so it moves more air without tiring your arm, for big lots and wet fall leaves. Each comes in battery, gas and corded electric. Battery blowers now match small gas blowers and are far quieter, but they run 10 to 30 minutes at full power, so a big yard needs a spare battery.
