Best Evaporative Coolers Ranked

28 portable evaporative coolers, scored on price per 1,000 CFM, airflow, tank size, features and warranty.

Last updated: October 31, 2026

An evaporative cooler, or swamp cooler, blows air through wet pads, and the water that evaporates cools the air by as much as 15 to 25 °F in a dry climate. It uses a fraction of an air conditioner’s power, but it adds humidity, so it works best where the air is dry and a door or window is open. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much air you get for the money, how much it moves, how long it runs on a tank, its features and warranty.

Airflow decides how big a space it cools. A cooler of 1,000 CFM or so suits a room; a garage or patio needs 3,000 CFM or more.

The pads decide how much it cools. Thick rigid cellulose pads wet evenly and cool more than thin fiber pads, and last for seasons.
