The default choice for heating a ventilated tent, blind or small cabin on 1 lb cylinders, with the option to hook up a bigger tank later. Keep the 9 sq in of fresh air the maker requires.
Amazon $89.97A propane heater works with no outlet, which makes it the heater for tents, ice shacks, hunting blinds, job sites and garages without much power. Propane holds about 21,500 BTU per pound, so a heater running at 9,000 BTU an hour empties a 1 lb cylinder in about two and a half hours, and a 20 lb tank lasts roughly 20 times as long. Rated output is what the burner puts out: two heaters at the same BTU give the same heat.
There are three kinds. A portable heater, the Buddy style radiant heater or a cabinet heater, stands on its own, runs on a 1 lb cylinder or a hose to a bigger tank, and is usually the only kind its maker approves for enclosed spaces. A tank-top heater screws onto a 20 lb tank and throws bright radiant heat for outdoor work and patios. A forced-air (torpedo) heater uses a fan to push out tens of thousands of BTU fast, for garages, barns and job sites with fresh air.
Every propane heater uses oxygen and gives off water vapor and some carbon monoxide. Follow the maker’s ventilation rule, use a battery carbon monoxide alarm wherever you run one, and don’t sleep with one running unless the maker says it’s made for that.
