Best Salt Chlorinators Ranked

37 salt water chlorine generators scored on chlorine output for the price, replacement cell cost, warranty, features and certification.

Last updated: October 27, 2026

A salt chlorinator makes the pool’s chlorine itself. Pool salt dissolved in the water, at about a tenth the saltiness of the sea, passes through an electrolytic cell on the return line, and the cell turns some of it into chlorine. That replaces buying, storing and adding chlorine by hand, though the pool still needs its pH and stabilizer checked. The cell wears out after a few years and is the main running cost.

Makers rate each system by the largest pool it can serve, but that rating is generous and varies between brands. This ranking compares systems on the chlorine they actually make, in pounds a day, as the maker or the NSF listing states it. In hot weather or a busy pool, pick a system rated well above your pool’s size. Each pool type is ranked separately.
