Best Snow Blowers Ranked

38 single-stage and two-stage snow blowers, gas, battery and electric, scored on price per inch of width, width, throw, intake height and warranty.

A snow blower turns an hour of shoveling into a few minutes of walking. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how wide a path it clears for the money, how far it throws, how deep a snow it takes in one pass and how long it’s covered.

There are two kinds. A single-stage blower has one fast auger that scoops snow and throws it out the chute in one motion. It’s light, easy to store and fine for paved driveways and snow up to about 8 in, but the auger touches the ground, so it isn’t for gravel, and it struggles with the heavy, wet pile the plow leaves. A two-stage blower has a slower auger that feeds an impeller, which throws the snow. It takes deeper and wetter snow, throws it farther, drives itself, and sits on skid shoes so it works on gravel, at more cost, weight and storage space.

Each kind comes in gas, battery and corded electric. Battery machines now match small gas engines for most storms and start at a button, but a long driveway in deep snow can need a second battery. Corded machines are the cheapest and lightest, but the cord limits them to short drives and walks.
