A pressure washer strips dirt, mildew and old stain from decks, driveways, siding, fences and cars far faster than a hose and brush. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much cleaning power it has for the money, how long its hose is and how long it’s covered.
Two numbers describe a washer. PSI, pounds per square inch, is how hard the water hits, which lifts stuck-on grime. GPM, gallons per minute, is how much water it moves, which rinses the loosened dirt away and sets how fast you cover an area. Multiply them and you get cleaning units, the industry’s single measure of how much work a washer does.
There are two kinds. An electric washer plugs into an outlet. It’s quiet, light, starts at the trigger and needs no engine upkeep, and it’s plenty for cars, patio furniture, grills and small decks. A gas washer has two to three times the cleaning units, for driveways, two-story siding and big decks, with more noise, weight and upkeep. Higher-end gas models use a triplex pump that can be rebuilt and lasts far longer than the axial pumps in most consumer washers.
