For budget-minded jon boat and inflatable owners who already have or will buy a 36 V lithium battery.
Amazon $1,299.99An electric outboard is quiet, starts every time, needs no fuel or winterizing and is allowed on lakes that ban gas engines. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much power you get for the money, whether the battery is in the price, how heavy it is to carry, whether it’s built for saltwater and how long it’s covered.
Power is the first choice. Makers rate electric outboards by input power in kilowatts, and most say which gas outboard each one matches: about 1 kW for a 3 hp, 3 kW for a 6 hp and 6 kW for a 9.9 hp. Pick by the gas engine your boat would carry.
The battery is the second. Some motors come with a battery, often built onto the motor itself; others need one bought separately, which can cost as much as the motor. Range depends far more on battery size and speed than on the motor: running at half throttle roughly doubles it.
Weight matters if you lift the motor on and off the transom. Motors with an integrated battery are weighed with it.
