A pump under 2.5 HP is enough for most in-ground pools with a filter, a heater and a suction or pressure cleaner. Because a variable-speed pump spends most of its day at low speed, a slightly larger pump costs little more to run and leaves headroom for a spa or water feature. Many of these run on either 115 V or 230 V, so they can replace an old single-speed pump without new wiring; on 115 V most give less than their full rated power.
