A safety listing is the one thing on a space heater you can’t judge for yourself. It means a recognized lab such as UL, Intertek (the ETL mark) or CSA has tested the heater to UL 1278, the US safety standard for portable electric heaters, and keeps inspecting the factory that builds it. Portable heaters are involved in an average of 1,700 home fires, 70 deaths and 160 injuries a year in the US, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (2017 to 2019 average).
So we checked. For each of the 56 space heaters we rank, we read the maker’s product page, the owner’s manual and the maker’s own copy on its Amazon listing, and recorded whether the maker says which lab listed the heater, and whether it says the heater switches itself off when it tips over or overheats.
What we found
Only 23 of 56 (41%) say which lab listed the heater. 19 state all three: a listing, a tip-over shutoff and an overheat shutoff.
A missing statement doesn’t mean a heater isn’t listed. Many heaters from well-known brands carry a UL or ETL mark on the rating label underneath, and some manuals say the heater “conforms to UL 1278” without naming a lab that tested it. What it does mean is that you can’t check before you buy, and a heater with no mark at all looks the same in an online listing as one with a mark.

By price, the median heater that states a listing costs $84.99 and the median one that doesn’t, $69.99. Paying more doesn’t guarantee a stated listing: some of the most expensive heaters we rank don’t state one.
| Price | Heaters | States a listing | States tip-over shutoff | States overheat shutoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $40 | 10 | 30% | 90% | 90% |
| $40 to $79 | 20 | 40% | 80% | 100% |

| $150 and up | 7 | 0% | 57% | 43% |
Shutoffs
Two automatic shutoffs matter most. A tip-over switch cuts the power when the heater is knocked over, so it can’t keep heating a rug or a bed it has fallen against. An overheat cutoff switches it off when its insides get too hot, as they do when the heater is covered or blocked.
47 of the 56 heaters state a tip-over shutoff, 7 say nothing either way, and 2 say they don’t have one.

How to check a heater before you buy
- Look for the mark in the listing photos. A UL, ETL or CSA logo on the rating label or the box is the listing itself. “Meets UL standards” or “certified” with no lab named isn’t.
- Search the manual. Most makers post a PDF manual. Search it for “listed”, “UL”, “ETL” or “Intertek”.
- Check the lab’s database. UL’s Product iQ (free account) can be searched by brand or model number for UL-listed heaters.
- Prefer a heater that names both shutoffs, and plug it straight into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip.
How we counted
The 56 heaters are the current models on our space heater rankings: the best-selling and best-known plug-in electric heaters sold in the US, not a random sample. A listing counts only when the maker names the lab or shows its mark: on its own product page, in the manual or in its copy on the Amazon listing. A retailer’s claim doesn’t count. These figures are worked out from our records every time the site is built, so they change as we add heaters and as makers publish more.
Each heater’s page shows what we found under Safety, and a heater with a stated listing scores higher on our safety factor. See how we rank.
