An LED grow light stands in for the sun indoors, whether that’s a shelf of seedlings in March, herbs on a kitchen rack or tomatoes and peppers in a grow tent. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much plant light it puts out for the money, how much light it makes from each watt of electricity, whether it dims and connects to a controller, and how long it’s covered.
Power is the first choice. Seedlings, herbs and leafy greens do well under a light of 100 to 200 W over a 2x2 or 3x3 ft space. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and other fruiting plants need much more light, and a 4x4 ft tent of them wants 300 to 500 W.
PPF is the second. Photosynthetic photon flux, in µmol/s, is the total light a fixture gives off in the range plants use. It’s the fairest way to compare two lights, unlike the “equivalent” wattage many listings headline or a PAR reading taken under the center of the light.
Form is the third. A single panel is compact and simple. A bar light spreads its diodes across several bars, which lights the edges of a tent more evenly and usually runs more efficiently, at a higher price.
