An automatic gate opener moves a driveway or farm gate on a remote, a keypad or a phone, so nobody has to get out of the car to open it. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how heavy and how long a gate each kit is rated for, whether it carries a UL 325 safety listing, what it costs and how long it’s covered.
Gate type is the first choice. A swing gate opener pushes and pulls a hinged gate with an arm, one arm for a single gate and two for a pair that meets in the middle. A sliding gate opener drives a gate that rolls sideways along a track, with a gear rack or chain on the gate.
Size is the second. Swing kits are rated per leaf, and most makers’ headline weight only applies to a short gate: a long leaf catches more wind and puts more load on the arm, so check the maker’s length and weight chart against your gate. Solid privacy gates need a heavier opener than an open tube or ornamental gate of the same weight.
Power is the third. Most swing kits run from a 12 V or 24 V battery charged by a transformer, which keeps the gate working through a power cut and lets a solar panel replace the transformer far from an outlet. Some kits include the panel and battery; many sell them separately. Sliding openers that run straight from mains power stop when the power does.
