A vehicle awning bolts to a roof rack and rolls out to throw shade or keep rain off beside a truck, SUV or van. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much shade it gives for the money, how waterproof the fabric is, how much it weighs for its size and how long it’s covered.
Shape is the first choice. A side awning is a rectangle that pulls out along one side of the vehicle; it’s light, quick to open and cheap. A 180 or 270 degree wing awning pivots out from one rear corner and wraps around the side, or the side and the back, so it shades a tailgate kitchen as well as the doorway. Wings give far more shade but weigh more and cost more.
Size is the second. A 4.5 ft side awning shades about 30 sq ft, enough for a doorway and two chairs; an 8 ft one shades twice that. A full size 270 degree wing covers about 130 sq ft. Check that the awning’s length fits the rack and the vehicle’s side.
Weight and support is the third. A full size wing can weigh 70 lb, more than many factory roof rails are rated to carry, while light models suit crossbars. Freestanding wings hold themselves up without poles in calm weather; most side awnings need their legs set and staked.
