A weight distribution hitch slides into the tow vehicle’s receiver in place of a plain ball mount. Its spring bars or chains lever part of the trailer’s tongue weight forward onto the front axle and back onto the trailer axles, so the rear of the truck doesn’t squat and the front wheels keep their grip for steering and braking. Most also control sway. Trailer weight is the first choice. Weigh the loaded trailer and its tongue, and pick a hitch whose ratings cover both with some room to spare. A hitch rated far above the tongue weight rides stiff, so bigger isn’t better.
Sway control is the second. Integrated designs build it into the head or the brackets and keep working with nothing extra to hook up. An add on friction bar costs less but bolts to the trailer frame and has to come off before backing up or on slippery roads.
What’s in the box is the third. Some kits come without a shank or a ball, and the shank has to give the right drop or rise for your truck, so check both before comparing prices.
