Best Whole-House Water Filters Ranked

19 whole-house water filters, scored on cost per 1,000 gallons, certification, flow, price and warranty.

Last updated: November 2, 2026

A whole-house filter sits on the main water line where it enters the house, so every tap, shower and appliance gets filtered water. Most are bought to take out chlorine taste and smell and sediment from city water. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: what the filters cost to replace for every 1,000 gallons, whether the filtration is certified by an accredited body, how much water it passes, what it costs and how long it’s covered.

Build is the first choice. A cartridge system holds filters in big plastic housings and is cheap to buy, but the cartridges are swapped every few months to a year. A tank system holds a bed of carbon media that lasts years, costs more up front and needs less upkeep; some backwash themselves and need a drain and an outlet.

Your water is the second. Many cities disinfect with chloramine instead of chlorine, and plain carbon handles chloramine poorly; look for catalytic carbon and a maker claim for chloramine. Check your water report before buying.

Flow is the third. A filter that can’t keep up drops the pressure when two showers run at once. A small house gets by on 7 to 10 gpm; a large one with three or more bathrooms wants 12 to 15 gpm.
