A hardwired EMS with phone monitoring for 50 amp RVs. A good buy while it sells for less than the Gen II version.
Amazon $329.99An RV surge protector sits between the campground pedestal and the shore power cord, or inside the RV’s power line, and takes the hit when a spike comes down the wire. An EMS (electrical management system) does that and more: it cuts power when the voltage runs too high or too low, or when the pedestal is wired wrong, and waits before switching back on. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much it protects, how big a surge it absorbs, what it tells you, what it costs and how long it’s covered.
Service is the first choice. Match the protector to the RV’s plug: a 30 amp unit for a three-prong plug, a 50 amp unit for a four-prong plug. Each is ranked against others of the same service.
Surge only or EMS is the second. A surge-only protector stops spikes and usually lights up to warn of bad wiring, but it lets low voltage through, and low voltage is what burns out air conditioner compressors and other motors. An EMS shuts the power off until the problem clears, so it’s the choice for anyone who camps at older or crowded parks.
Portable or hardwired is the third. A portable unit plugs into the pedestal and moves between RVs, but it can be stolen or left behind. A hardwired unit is installed inside the RV once and always protects it.
