For families who want a certified tank RO system with more output and a faster pour than entry models, at a low price.
Amazon $199.99An under-sink reverse osmosis system pushes tap water through a membrane fine enough to hold back dissolved salts, metals and most other contaminants, then sends what it rejects down the drain. It feeds its own small faucet beside the kitchen tap. These rankings compare what the makers and the certifiers publish on the same terms: whether the system is certified, what its filters cost to keep up, how much water it wastes, how much it makes, what it costs and how long it’s covered.
Tank or tankless is the first choice. A tankless system has a pump that filters on demand, so it fills a glass in seconds, wastes less water and frees up cabinet space, but it needs an outlet under the sink. A tank system slowly fills a storage tank of a few gallons using house water pressure alone; it costs less and needs no power, but the tank can run low when you fill a big pot.
Certification is the second. NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard for reverse osmosis systems, and a listing from NSF, WQA, IAPMO or CSA means an independent lab tested that exact model. Many makers say a system is “tested to” or “meets” the standard, which is not the same thing, and some systems are certified only for lead-free materials (NSF/ANSI 372).
Filter cost is the third. Over a few years the replacement filters and membranes cost more than the system itself, and the yearly cost ranges from under $100 to over $300 depending on the model.
