A tank system holds a large bed of carbon media, sometimes with KDF, in a tall tank on the main line, and the media lasts years before it’s replaced. They cost more up front than cartridge systems but need little upkeep. Some have a control valve that backwashes the media on a schedule, which needs a drain and an outlet nearby; others have no valve and simply pass water through.
