A stick welder burns a flux-coated rod and needs no gas bottle, so it works outdoors in the wind and on rusty or painted steel: farm repairs, trailers, fences and heavy plate. Most small inverter stick welders can also lift-arc TIG steel with an add-on torch and gas: a cheap way to try TIG, though slower to learn than high-frequency start. Most weigh under 20 lb.
