Best Walk-Behind String Mowers Ranked

10 walk-behind string mowers.

Last updated: November 2, 2026

A walk-behind string mower, also sold as a trimmer mower or wheeled string trimmer, spins heavy trimmer line under a deck on two large wheels. It clears tall grass, weeds and rough ground along fences, ditches and tree lines where a lawn mower stalls and a handheld trimmer takes all day. Most cut a 22 in path with an engine of about 160 to 200 cc and are pushed by hand; a few drive their own wheels or start with a button.
