For a farm, small business or very large home that needs certified Class A treatment at high flow. Most homes are better served by the PRO20 or smaller.
Amazon $5,030A whole house UV purifier is a stainless steel chamber with an ultraviolet lamp inside, plumbed into the main line after the sediment filter. Water flowing past the lamp gets a dose of UV that leaves bacteria, viruses and cysts unable to reproduce, with no chemicals added and no change in taste. It doesn’t remove iron, hardness, sediment or chemicals, and it only works on clear water, so most wells need filtration ahead of it. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much water it treats for the money at a full dose, whether it’s certified, whether it tells you when it stops working, how long the lamp lasts and how long it’s covered.
Flow is the first choice. Size the unit to the most water the house uses at once, not the average: two or three bathrooms usually need 9 to 12 GPM, and a large home or one that waters from the same well needs more. Check what dose the flow is rated at. A unit rated 12 GPM at 30 mJ/cm² treats about 9 GPM at the 40 mJ/cm² that NSF/ANSI 55 Class A requires, and many budget units give no dose at all.
Monitoring is the second. A UV lamp can dim, fail or be blocked by a fouled sleeve while water keeps flowing, and nothing about the water will tell you. A lamp alarm catches a dead lamp; a UV sensor catches a weak dose; a shutoff valve stops untreated water reaching the taps.
Certification is the third. NSF/ANSI 55 Class A certification is what many health departments and lenders ask for on a well with a known contamination problem. Class B covers only supplemental treatment of water that already tests safe.
Top Picks
A bare bones budget UV for a cabin or a well that already passes bacteria tests. Too little is published to rely on it for a known problem.
