A sliding gate opener sits beside the gate on a concrete pad and drives a gate that rolls along a track, through a gear rack bolted to the gate or a chain stretched along it. Sliding gates suit a driveway that slopes up behind the gate or has no room for a gate to swing. A rack drive runs quieter and needs less upkeep than a chain; many kits include only a few feet of rack, so a long gate needs more.
