Best Hard Shell Rooftop Tents Ranked

24 hard shell rooftop tents.

Last updated: October 31, 2026

A hard shell tent lives inside a rigid case. Undo the latches and gas struts lift the lid straight up or at an angle (a clamshell), so most are up in a minute or two and the bedding stays inside when closed. The shell is quieter at speed and stands up to wind, rain and snow better than fabric. The trade-offs are price and bed size: a hard shell’s bed is no bigger than its case, and it usually costs more per square foot.
