A modern wood stove burns its smoke a second time before it leaves: either over a row of air tubes at the top of the firebox (non-catalytic) or through a honeycomb catalytic combustor that lights off at a lower temperature. Both get a stove under the EPA limit; catalytic stoves tend to burn longer and lower, while tube stoves are simpler to run. Firebox size and log length decide how much wood goes in at once, and so how long it burns between loads.
