An open lid fan sits under a hinged dome that lifts clear of the opening, which leaves nothing between the blade and the sky and keeps the unit low on the roof. The lid has to close before rain gets in: on manual models that means turning a crank, while models with a rain sensor and motorized lid close themselves. Most take a separate vent cover later if you want to run them in rain.
