Best Bidirectional OBD2 Scan Tools Ranked

28 bidirectional OBD2 scan tools, scored on price, service functions, coding, software updates and warranty.

Last updated: November 2, 2026

A bidirectional scan tool does more than read and clear codes. It sends commands to the car’s modules, so you can switch on a cooling fan, cycle an ABS pump or retract an electronic parking brake, and it runs the resets and relearns that follow a brake, battery or steering job. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: what it costs, how many service functions it runs, whether it codes modules and talks to newer cars, how long its software updates are free and how long it’s covered.

Form is the first choice. A tablet or handheld has its own screen and works on any car without your phone. A phone dongle plugs into the OBD2 port and runs its tests through an app on your phone, which costs much less but ties the tool to that app and often to a subscription.

Updates are the second. Most tablets include one or two years of free software updates, after which coverage for new model years stops unless you pay to renew; a few tools update free for life. The tool keeps working without updates, but only on the cars it already knew.

Newer cars are the third. Many 2020 and later GM models use CAN FD, and BMW, Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover and others use DoIP, so a tool without them may not reach every module on a recent car. ECU coding, for replacement modules and retrofits, matters mostly on European cars.
