For upgrading a 6 cu ft absorption cutout to 8 cu ft of compressor fridge at a fair price.
Amazon $1,186.48A 12V RV refrigerator is a built-in compressor fridge that runs straight off the house battery, with no propane and no inverter. It sits in a cabinet or a wall opening with a front door, like the fridge at home. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: what each cubic foot of storage costs, how much it holds, how much power it uses, what it does for you, and how long it’s covered.
Portable chest fridges are ranked separately in 12V Fridges. Propane and absorption fridges and 120V-only house fridges aren’t ranked here.
Size is the first choice, and it’s set by the opening you have. Measure the cutout’s height, width and depth before you shop. Many 12V fridges are made to drop into the cutout of an older 6, 8 or 10 cu ft absorption fridge, and some fit more space into the same hole.
Power is the second. A compressor fridge runs all day, so its draw decides how big a battery bank and solar array you need. Few makers publish a daily energy figure; where one is given, it’s the best number to plan around.
Defrost is the third. A frost-free fridge melts its own ice. A manual defrost fridge uses a little less power, but every so often you have to empty it and let the frost melt.
