Every tire changer, wheel balancer and combo kit gets a score from 0 to 100% built from five factors, which maps onto the 5-point rating shown on the site (a 0% score would be 1.5 stars; a perfect score, 5). Each factor is scored against fixed reference points, not against the other products in the list, so adding a new model never moves another model’s rating. Machines are grouped by type: tire changers, wheel balancers, and changer and balancer combos. Warranty uses the same scale for all three; price, rim size, size and features use a scale for each type.
| Factor | Measures | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Price | price of the machine or kit | 25% |
| Rim size | largest rim the changer clamps or the balancer takes | 20% |
| Tire size or wheel weight | largest tire diameter for changers and combos, heaviest wheel for balancers | 15% |
| Features | assist arms, bead blaster and tilt-back tower (changers); automatic measuring, laser and ALU programs (balancers) | 25% |
| Warranty | warranty length | 15% |
Where the numbers come from
Rim and tire ranges, wheel weight limits, features and warranty come from the maker’s product page, spec sheet or manual, the maker’s own listing copy at a retailer, or a dealer’s spec page. Prices are checked at Amazon, the maker’s own store and other retailers, and the lowest price at a store the page links to is used.
The factors
Price is the current price, on a log scale, so halving the price always counts the same. For tire changers, $3,500 scores zero and $1,200 full marks. For wheel balancers, $2,200 scores zero and $600 full marks. For combos, $4,500 scores zero and $1,500 full marks.
Rim size is the largest rim the machine takes. For changers and combos it is the largest rim the turntable clamps, from either side: 18 in scores zero and 26 in full marks. For balancers it is the largest rim diameter: 22 in scores zero and 30 in full marks.
Tire size or wheel weight is the largest tire diameter for changers and combos: 34 in scores zero and 44 in full marks. For balancers it is the heaviest wheel the shaft takes: 120 lb scores zero and 165 lb full marks.
Features add up to full marks.
- Changers: 45% for two assist arms (one arm earns two thirds of that), 35% for a bead blaster and 20% for a tilt-back tower.
- Balancers: 45% for automatic rim measuring, 30% for a laser weight pointer and 25% for ALU programs for alloy wheels.
- Combos: 40% for two assist arms (one arm earns two thirds of that), 25% for a bead blaster, 10% for a tilt-back tower, 15% for automatic rim measuring on the balancer and 10% for a laser weight pointer.
Warranty is the maker’s warranty: none scores zero and 1 year full marks.
What isn’t scored
Bead breaker force, motor power, voltage, rim width, balancing accuracy, cycle time and weight are listed but not scored. Nearly every machine publishes the same figures for these, so they don’t separate one machine from another.
Missing data
If a figure isn’t published, that factor gets the neutral middle score (50) and the product page marks it as estimated. Features is neutral only when none of its features are published; if some are, an unpublished one counts as missing. The exception is warranty: a maker that doesn’t publish one gets no warranty counted, so that factor scores zero and is marked estimated.
Ties and discontinued models
Products are ranked by score within each group. Discontinued models stay listed but rank below every current model and can be hidden with the “Hide discontinued” filter.
