Best Benchtop Metal Lathes Ranked

21 benchtop metal lathes for the home shop.

Last updated: November 3, 2026

A benchtop metal lathe turns steel, aluminum and brass into round parts: shafts, bushings, spacers, pins and threaded fittings. Mini lathes with a 7 in swing and 12 to 16 in between centers weigh about 80 to 150 lb and suit small parts. Larger 8 to 10 in machines with 18 to 39 in between centers handle shafts and axles but weigh 190 to 430 lb and need a strong bench or stand. Check how a lathe cuts threads: change gears are cheap and slow to swap, a gearbox or an electronic leadscrew picks a thread with a lever or a button.
