A stationary band saw clamps the stock in a vise and lowers a bow with the blade through it, so it makes square, repeatable cuts. Sizes such as 5 x 6 and 7 x 12 give round capacity and rectangular width. A horizontal/vertical saw also stands the bow upright for contour cutting. A hydraulic downfeed sets a steady cutting pressure, a coolant system extends blade life, and a mitering vise cuts angles; the better saws weigh 280 to 410 lb and need a dolly or lift gate on delivery.
