Best Pipe Threading Machines Ranked

26 electric pipe threading machines and hand-held power drives, scored on price per inch of pipe, capacity, dies included, weight and warranty.

Last updated: November 3, 2026

A power pipe threader cuts the tapered NPT threads that join black iron, galvanized and stainless pipe for gas, water, fire sprinkler and conduit. Doing it with a hand ratchet takes minutes per thread on 2 in pipe; a power threader takes seconds. These rankings compare what the makers and sellers publish on the same terms: how much pipe you thread for the money, how big the pipe can be, whether the dies are in the box, how heavy it is to move and how long it’s covered.

Machine or hand-held is the first choice. A machine grips the pipe and spins it against the die head, and the good ones also cut and ream the pipe and feed oil, all from one stand. Hand-held drives turn the die head on a pipe held in a vise, and weigh 10 to 30 lb instead of 100 to 400 lb. RIDGID, Milwaukee and Rothenberger sell the professional versions; a long list of 2300 W generics sell the same idea for $150 to $400.

Pipe size is the second. Gas and water lines at home are 1/2 to 1-1/4 in; commercial work, sprinkler mains and structural pipe run to 2 in and above. Only a few machines here reach 3 or 4 in, and they stay in the shop. Check the dies: the number and size of the dies in the box set what you can thread the day it arrives.

Corded or cordless is the third. The RIDGID 760 FXP and the Milwaukee M18 FUEL run on batteries, so there is no cord on a roof or in a crawl space, at over $1,600 a kit.
