A mini skid steer is a small loader you stand on or sit in, with a bucket on lifting arms and a hydraulic port for attachments such as augers, trenchers and pallet forks. The ones sold online weigh about 1,400 to 2,200 lb, fit through a garden gate, and arrive on a pallet for about $4,200 to $7,700. These rankings compare what the sellers publish on the same terms: what it costs, how strong its engine is, how much it says it can lift, and what comes standard.
Engine class is the first choice. A 13.5 hp single-cylinder machine moves mulch, gravel and soil and costs the least. A 23 to 26 hp twin-cylinder machine has stronger hydraulics for augers and trenchers, and most have three hydraulic pumps, so you can drive and lift at once.
Tracks or wheels is the second. Rubber tracks are easier on lawns and soft ground. Wheels travel faster on pavement.
Stated lifting capacity is the number to treat with the most care. Makers print different figures for what looks like the same machine: a rated operating capacity, a maximum load, a lifting force or a tipping load. They run from 269 lb to 1,765 lb, and the figures are the seller’s own claims, not test results. Ask for the rated operating capacity in writing.
Almost all of these machines are built in China, and many are the same loader sold under several brand names. Listing text and dimensions are copied between sellers, and some don’t add up. Where a number conflicts with another on the same listing, the product page says so.
