Best Electric Hoists Ranked

44 electric chain and wire-rope hoists, scored on price per ton, lift speed, lift height, safety features and warranty.

An electric hoist hangs from a beam, a hook or a ceiling mount and lifts a load with a motor, so one person can raise an engine, a motor, a kayak or a stack of lumber. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: how much rated load you get for the money, how fast and how high it lifts, which safety features it lists, and how long it’s covered.

Chain or wire rope is the first choice. A chain hoist stacks its chain in a bag, holds a load steadily and runs from a one-ton garage model up to industrial units. A wire-rope hoist winds a steel cable onto a drum, costs less, and usually rates its full load on a double line at half the lift height. Most wire-rope models here quote a lower load on a single line, so this site compares them at the full, double-line load.

Power is the second. Most garage hoists plug into a 120 V outlet, but the stronger motors draw 10 to 15 A, so they want a circuit of their own. Hoists of two tons and up often need 230 V or three-phase power, and the three-phase models here only suit a shop that already has it. Battery hoists run without an outlet but carry less.

Rated load and the structure it hangs from matter more than any spec. A hoist only lifts safely from a beam, hook or gantry that is rated for the load, and none of these hoists is meant for lifting people. A published duty class under ASME HST-1 (H1 to H4) or a UL or ETL listing is a sign the maker has tested the hoist against a standard.
