The cheapest 5,200 BTU tent air conditioner with a published 400 W rating.
Amazon $299A camping air conditioner is a small compressor unit, usually 4,000 to 8,000 BTU, that cools a tent, van, truck cab or small camper from a battery or a portable power station. These rankings compare what the makers and sellers publish on the same terms: cost per BTU of cooling, how many watts the unit draws, how loud it is, how much it weighs and how long it’s covered. Most of the cheapest units are sold under unfamiliar brands with no independent test behind their claims, so the ratings favor figures a maker states as a rating and treat the rest with caution.
Power input is the first choice, so each unit is ranked in one of two groups. A DC or battery unit takes 48 V DC or 12/24 V vehicle power directly, or comes with a battery, so it runs from a battery with no inverter in between. An AC unit needs 110 V, which means a power station with an AC outlet rated 1,000 W or more, or a vehicle inverter; it is cheaper but wastes some battery energy in the conversion.
Watts decide how long a night lasts. A 1,000 Wh battery runs a 400 W unit for roughly two and a half hours at full cooling, longer once the compressor cycles off. Several makers quote an average draw or an eco-mode figure instead of a rated one, and those are listed as the maker states them.
BTU claims need care. A compressor that draws 400 W and delivers 5,200 BTU would be more efficient than the small units that EcoFlow rates at about 9 BTU per watt, and none of the budget claims has an independent test. The ratings credit no more than 11 BTU per watt.
