A shop air filtration system hangs from the ceiling or sits on a bench, and pulls the fine dust that a dust collector misses out of the room air. Sanders, routers and saws throw particles that stay in the air for hours, which is what the filter, the fan and the timer are for. These rankings compare what the makers and sellers publish on the same terms: what the airflow costs, how much there is, how fine a particle the filter is rated for, the features that save you a trip up a ladder, and how long it’s covered.
Type is the first choice. A ceiling-hung unit takes no floor or bench space and covers a whole room, and most have a remote and a timer. A portable or tabletop unit goes to the dust and needs no hooks, but is usually smaller in airflow for its size. Each type is ranked on its own.
Airflow is the second. It’s quoted in CFM at top speed, and it’s free-air airflow at the fan, not the CADR rating on a home air purifier, so the two numbers can’t be swapped. A common rule is to size the unit so that it moves the room’s volume about six times an hour; a 20 x 20 ft shop with an 8 ft ceiling is 3,200 cubic feet, or about 320 CFM.
Filtration is the third. Nearly every unit has a coarse outer filter and a finer inner one rated to 1 micron; only a few list a HEPA-class (0.3 micron) filter. Where a listing doesn’t say, it’s marked, not guessed.
Many of the lowest-priced units are sold under unfamiliar brands with limited published specs and no published warranty; the maker-brand units sell at higher prices and often publish less on the retail listing. Where a figure isn’t published here it is marked.
