A metal-cutting band saw slices steel pipe, tube, angle, strut, rebar and bar stock more quietly and with less heat and sparking than an abrasive chop saw. Portable saws are handheld and go to the work; stationary saws clamp the stock in a vise and cut it square or mitered. Type is the first choice. A cordless portable saw runs on a battery and suits electricians, plumbers and installers who cut at the job. A corded portable saw has more sustained power, and several come with a base that turns the saw into a benchtop cutoff saw. A stationary horizontal or horizontal/vertical saw holds the stock in a vise, which gives square, repeatable cuts in thick material. Each type is ranked on its own.
Capacity is the second. Portable saws are sold by their deepest cut, usually 5 in for a full-size saw and about 2.5 in for a compact one. Stationary saws are sold by size, such as 5 x 6 or 7 x 12, meaning round stock up to that diameter and rectangular stock up to that width. Check the capacity at a miter angle too: it shrinks as the vise swings.
Features are the third. On a cordless saw a brushless motor, variable speed and a work light matter most; on a stationary saw a hydraulic downfeed, a coolant system, a mitering vise and automatic shut-off do. Blade speed range is listed but isn’t scored.
Price and brand reputation pull in different directions in this category: much of the lowest-priced hardware is sold under unfamiliar brands with limited published specs and no published warranty, while the maker-brand saws publish less on the retail listing.
