The best-equipped standard Scotty for the money: long boom, two releases and a lifetime warranty.
Amazon $689.99An electric downrigger lowers a heavy weight on a cable, with the fishing line clipped to it, so a lure trolls at a set depth. At the push of a button it brings the weight back up when a fish strikes or the day is done. These rankings compare what the makers and sellers publish on the same terms: how fast it retrieves, how much weight it is rated for, how far the boom reaches, what it costs, which features it has and how long it’s covered.
Almost every electric downrigger sold is made by Cannon or Scotty, so this is a two-brand category. Several models are sold only through marine dealers, so the list covers the ones with a readable Amazon price.
Class is the first choice. Standard units are push-button winches with no depth counter. Premium units add a digital depth counter, tournament-grade stainless parts, or electronic depth control and wireless networking.
Boom is the second. A longer boom puts the line farther from the boat, which keeps lines apart in a spread. The fixed 24 in and 30 in booms suit small boats; the telescoping booms reach 53 to 60 in.
Saltwater is the third. For a saltwater boat, look for a stainless boom and cable.
