A pond aerator adds oxygen and keeps water moving, which cuts fish kills, algae blooms and bottom muck. These rankings compare what the makers publish on the same terms: what you pay for the pond size or acreage the unit is rated for, how much air or water it moves, how much power it draws and how long it is covered.
Bubbler, compressor or floating is the first choice. A bubbler kit is a small air pump with tubing and diffusers for a backyard or koi pond, and it keeps a hole open in winter ice. A lake compressor sits on shore and pushes air to diffusers on the bottom of a pond of an acre or more; it mixes the whole water column. A floating aerator throws water into the air for surface aeration and a spray display, and it needs only a power cord.
Depth is the second. Bottom diffusers work best in water 6 ft deep or more, and the compressors here are rated to 30 to 65 ft. Floating units need as little as 15 to 40 in of water but only treat the top layer.
Rated size is the third, and the one to treat with care. The same 5.2 CFM compressor is sold for “3 acres” by a dozen sellers, and no independent test backs those ratings. A larger or deeper pond should get more airflow or a second diffuser than the label suggests.
