A chain hoist lifts on a steel load chain that feeds into a chain bag, and it holds a load in place with a brake when you release the control. The models here run from a 330 lb mini hoist to a 6,000 lb three-phase unit. Garage and home-shop models run on 120 V and lift one ton or less; heavier ones want 230 V or three-phase power. A pair of upper and lower limit switches stops the chain at its ends, which is the feature to look for first.
