How We Rank Pond Aerators

Last updated: November 3, 2026

Every pond aerator gets a score from 0 to 100% built from four factors, which maps onto the 5-point rating shown on the site (a 0% score would be 1.5 stars; a perfect score, 5). Each factor is scored against fixed reference points, not against the other products in the list, so adding a new model never moves another model’s rating. Aerators are grouped by type, bubbler kit, lake compressor and floating aerator, and each type has its own scale because the three do different jobs.

Where the numbers come from

Rated pond size, airflow, wattage, depth, horsepower and warranty come from the maker’s spec sheet, manual or product listing. Prices are checked at Amazon, and the lowest price at a store the page links to is used. Airflow quoted in cu in/min or L/min is converted to CFM.

The factors

Value is the current price divided by what the maker rates the unit for, on a log scale, so halving the price always counts the same. For bubbler kits it is dollars per 1,000 gal of rated pond: $100 scores zero and $10 full marks. For lake compressors it is dollars per rated acre: $1,500 scores zero and $40 full marks. For floating aerators it is dollars per horsepower: $2,000 scores zero and $100 full marks.

Output is the air or water the unit moves. For bubbler kits, 0.2 CFM scores zero and 2 CFM full marks. For lake compressors, 3 CFM scores zero and 8 CFM full marks. For floating aerators, the motor’s horsepower is the measure: 1/4 HP scores zero and 1.5 HP full marks.

Efficiency is output per watt. For bubbler kits, 0.02 CFM per watt scores zero and 0.10 full marks; for lake compressors, 0.006 and 0.014; for floating aerators, 8 and 24 gal/h per watt. It needs both the output and the wattage to be published.

Warranty is the warranty for home use: 1 year scores zero and 5 years full marks.

What isn’t scored

Rated depth, noise, diffusers and tubing in the box, timers, lights and cord length are listed but not scored. Independent oxygen-transfer tests are shown on the product page when there are any; we have none yet.

Caveats

The rated pond size and airflow are maker claims, and cheap compressors with the same motor often claim the same “3 acres” and the same CFM. A rating can’t tell you whether a unit will turn a given pond over, and a deep or large pond should get more air than the label. Floating aerators move water, not air, so their output and efficiency scales aren’t comparable with bubbler kits.

Missing data

If a figure isn’t published, that factor gets the neutral middle score (50) and the product page marks it as estimated. The exception is warranty: a maker that doesn’t publish one gets no warranty counted, so that factor scores zero, the same as the shortest warranty on the scale, and is marked estimated.

Ties and discontinued models

Products are ranked by score within each type. Discontinued models stay listed but rank below every current model and can be hidden with the “Hide discontinued” filter.
